I had the honor of naming the latest from Arturia: Augmented Yangtze! It's been vividly interesting to see the company lay down some foundation here in China and this software is a love letter to precisely the world I've built my career around: combining traditional instruments with synthesizers. Augmented Yangtze combines six different instrument textures with five full synthesizer engines, plus a stack of effects, full modulation capabilities, and all sorts of goodies inside. If you need some presets, feel free to download the ones I've gone and made.

Aftertouch Market

  • Deep and Dark Aftertouch-driven flute pad.

Bowed Casette Reel

  • A rich, deep arpeggio meant to sit beneath a soothing, substantially louder flute soloist. A major 7th chord arp look gives it a very dreamy, hypnotizing repetition.

Butterfly Lovers

  • A romantic CP with bowed erhu keeping it company.

Chengdu

  • My absolute favorite, a vivid pad strike.

Corn-Flavored Ice Cream

  • An arpeggiated percussion sequence.

First Train to Zhujiajiao

  • When you need to take a 5:50am train to the outskirts of the city, something's probably up. No matter how beautiful it is outside. A deep and evolving pad, making use of a metro ambience.

Found at the Electronics Market

  • An unforgivingly lofi sample player, like the chinese keyboards of the 90's.

Genwozou

  • A CP followed by a flute ensemble. Pronounced 'gun woah zoah.' Means, follow me.

Lao Kong's Steel Drum

  • A metallic, cinematic hit with ambitiously never-ending accompaniment.

Little Red Music Box

  • A plucky little music box sequence.

Make Time for Tea

  • A guqin with a warbling sustained synth.

Ravish Pipa

  • A stacatto Pluck with quite a resonant accompaniment.

Rockbund

  • An all-encompassing sound generator, a beautiful always-rising arpeggio sequence with all sorts of ethereal echoes generated from a Yangqin. Leave the arp on 'hold,' and install it in an art gallery somewhere. Warning- this one's pretty CPU-heavy.

Shanghai Bagels Don't Suck

  • A full-spectrum synth ensemble, with a coarse-tuned erhu as bass and a bit of soundscape as texture. A lovely opening few notes for your warm-up.

Watermelons from Guangzhou

  • Mellow and delay-driven, a patch for the ages! Great for riffs and overtures.

Which Man Drones

  • A sting quartet, driven by a madly droning man who refuses to change notes.
